ContentSignals

The record: three filings and a name

The ideas behind ContentSignals are on the public record in three published patent applications, from 2002 and 2012, and in the first use of the name on triongle.com.

What the filings are

All three are published patent applications, and each was later abandoned rather than carried through to grant. That does not change the public, dated record of the invention: the priority date is what establishes who described an idea, and when.[1] The dates below come from each application's record on Google Patents.

The filings, by priority date

  1. US 2003/0225619 A1 System and method for dealing with loyalty program points

    Priority 15 March 2002. Filed 14 March 2003. Published 4 December 2003. Abandoned.[2] Filed by Maynard Dokken with a co-inventor.[1]

It describes "A system for exchanging and valuing points or rewards from a plurality of loyalty programs", using a "settlement point" in a clearing-house to settle, convert, credit and debit points between accounts. The points are underwritten using assets and guarantees held by a custodian.[2]

On the thread: points across programmes.

  2. US 2004/0054613 A1 System and method for depositing and investing illiquid or restricted assets

    Priority 30 April 2002. Filed 30 April 2003. Published 18 March 2004. Abandoned. Inventor Maynard Dokken.[3]

It describes a governed vehicle that lets the owner of illiquid or restricted assets receive a liquid return on them, run by named parties: a fund originator, a fund manager, a trustee, a custodian, and a transfer agent and asset registry, with a base risk margin database that calculates the cost of the guarantees.[3][4]

On the thread: the governed roles and protections that cryptopoints.co, run by MarkCrest, will explain as a concept.

  3. US 2013/0290226 A1 System and method for social graph and graph assets valuation and monetization

    Priority 5 April 2012. Filed 5 April 2013. Published 31 October 2013. Abandoned. Inventor Maynard Dokken.[5]

It describes social and graph credit scoring, valuation and monetization; a graph database that provides "core classification services for ranking, indexing, and content analysis"; valuation by a version of customer equity and customer lifetime value adapted to social graphs; and a clearing-house for graph assets.[5] Swomi's record on the hub sets it out as the thesis Swomi was built on.[6]

On the thread: signals, the graph and valuation.

What was filed, and what was not

The hub's article on MarkCrest also records design intent that was never filed, and keeps it apart from what the filing claims.[7] This site does the same. It describes only what the filings say, and it uses them to explain the model, not to offer anything.

The name: ContentSignals© on triongle.com

The name was first used in public on triongle.com, styled "ContentSignals©", for the technology behind TriOngle's content pages and help centre. When those pages were pulled on 4 November 2026, the help articles that define ContentSignals carried the dates 17 and 19 March 2019. Those dates are the site's own and have not been checked against an outside record.

The Internet Archive confirms captures of these pages. The earliest capture whose own address names ContentSignals is of the help article "What does SwomiBUZZ Flyer with ContentSignals© mean for you?", made on 27 January 2021.[8] The help article on the difference between signals and clicks was captured the same day.[9] Earlier captures exist of three triongle.com pages that carry the name today, all made on 25 November 2020: the "how" page,[10] the automation page[11] and the channels page.[12] The captured pages themselves could not be opened from here, so whether the name appears in the 2020 captures is still to be checked.

Every one of these dates is earlier than 24 September 2025, when Cloudflare published its Content Signals Policy.[13]
